Warning : There is rambling.
When we are younger we say things like: Race car driver and Magician!
Little do we know that our ideas on what we want to be in the future rarely stick.
When I was a child I wanted to be a teacher, I think it was because I loved school and I respected my teachers, I looked up to them.
But as time went on, school wasn't so much fun anymore, it was more about discipline and our times tables. (You know, the hard stuff).
I didn't like my teachers as much as I used to, so my dream of being a teacher changed pretty quickly.
Of course, as I got older my dream job kept changing, it wasn't until my 13th birthday that I found the thing that stuck, Photography.
My step dad bought me a Canon (I know, I know, gross) for my birthday.
I took so many pictures!! And I was sure that photography was my thing, no one else's.
When I turned 15, my parents bought me the best camera ever, a Nikon. Which solidified my love for photography even further. I was going to be a photographer and nothing could stop me.
A little while later, I watched the movie 13 Going on 30 again, and I realized that Mark Ruffalo's character was a photographer too, and I was NOT a fan of his apartment, or how he looked.
He looked hungry, dirty and just not happy.
I began to go back to Mark's character more often as I got older, and once I realized that I would have to make a living for myself, I started to get scared about pursuing photography.
I began to think of other things I could do, in high school I wanted to be an author or a film maker..And of course, a photographer (but on the side).
I'm not sure when I came to the realization that photography was what I would do, no matter what. I think it was when I learned the difference between a job and a career. A job is something you have to get up and go to. A career is something you get to get up and go to.
I promise I'm getting to the point here soon, my rambling was forewarned.
In my years of college I have been through so many phases. Recently I decided to let the other students in my advanced photography get to me, they are better I thought, with people out there taking pictures like these, I have absolutely no chance of being successful.
But, I have learned that the self fulfilling prophecy is something that we need to take into consideration.
A self-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true.
Because of this "prophecy" I changed my outlook completely, I will be a photographer, I will enjoy going to work everyday, and lastly, I will be successful.
By putting yourself down, the only way you have to go is down.
DO NOT tell yourself you're not good enough, never tell yourself that your dream is not going to come true.
By telling yourself these awful things, you will start to believe them, and you will make them happen.
You may not know me, or take what I have to say seriously, but I want you to know, whoever you are, that you are good enough, and you can succeed.
You need to tell yourself this on a daily basis. Don't let your fears keep you from what you love doing. As a wise man once said "fear is a super power".
Do what makes you happy.
I don't know why I decided to write about this, I just had a very strong feeling that I needed to. I hope that maybe I instilled some sort of positivism in someone out there...
Have a great night you guys, and remember, be positive!!
When you say something or sing something enough times, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's almost like casting spells. -Feist
You couldn't have said it any better. I love the "fear is a superpower" idea, I know it wasn't yours but it fit perfectly here. Plus your writing voice is really good!
ReplyDeleteIt means a lot to me that not only did you take the time to read my blog, but you commented as well. I'm really glad you like my voice as well. That's awesome. I just hope that my message in this post reaches who it needs to reach.
DeleteI needed this and I'm sure others do, too. My favorite line was "By putting yourself down, the only way you have to go is down." Doing what makes you happy should be an easy thing, but it isn't always. I struggle daily with trying to accept and love myself. This was great, and so positive! Thanks. ♡
